Post History
Since 1948, Post 1870 has enjoyed an unique history. It was originaly located in the Downtown Athletic Club (DAC) in New York City´s Financial District and close to New York´s Harbors. The DAC is the home of the famous Heisman Memorial Trophy, which is presented annually to the top Collegiate Football Player in the country. Oil paintings of each winner are proudly displayed throughout the DAC.
Since our country was attacked on September 11, 2001, the doors to the DAC have been closed. We were suddenly nomads having our meetings at area restaurants. Through the graciousness of the Former Crewmembers of the U.S.S. Intrepid Association Inc. and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, we now have a place to meet aboard the Intrepid.
Post 1870 sponsors many events and fundraisers for our veterans and their families. These include sponsoring the Commander's Reception to conclude The U.S. Navy's New York City Fleet Week, a memorial grant in honor of our Past Post Commander, Tony Tuscillo , and financial gifts that directly benefit Veterans, to name a few.
A memorial plaque resides in the Downtown Athletic Club Lobby for Post 1870 Charter Members.
